I just finished watching this video of the late, great Fred Rogers meeting a young man whose life he had touched as a child. It brought to mind a pair of children I met a couple years back at Phoenix Comicon, wheelchair-bound but their parents had built Star Wars ships around their chairs. I gushed over them. And you could tell they were HAPPY to be able to participate in the fun everyone else was enjoying. They were the sweetest children who had been dealt a less than stellar hand in life, but that weekend, it didn't matter. They were having FUN, just like any other kid.

Comic Con isn't about the vendor hall. It's not about the panels. It's not even about the cosplay. It's about gathering the unlucky, the downtrodden, the social misfits, and giving them a safe haven to bond with others who share not just their interests, but their problems. Everyone deserves to feel awesome at Comic Con. EVERYONE.

So when you're cosplaying this weekend at Tucson Comic-Con, or at any other convention, if a child comes up to you, don't turn away. Don't give them the cold shoulder. Make them feel as awesome as you feel. After all, aren't we there to recapture some of the powerful imagination we had as kids? Share in the fun with the kids. You never know whose life you might change for the better.

After all, with great power comes great responsibility.
